Postcards From Wichita Falls

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Wichita Falls. I am proud to call it my hometown...as anyone who knows me...or any other Wichitan has figured out. There is one problem! Wichitans are just so social that it's nearly impossible to get all of them together at one place! This has posed a problem throughout my college years, so I decided to do something about it! I made a Facebook event called "Wichita, Wichita, Which of Ya'll Love Wichita"...duh...and waited for everyone to show up at Rosa's for a Wichita Falls dinner fiesta! Needless to say... with a group of Wichitans huddled around a table eating mexican food... IT WAS A HIT!

These aren't even all the folks from Wichita Falls that go to Texas A&M... I bet that's a surprise to you! One thing that we've always been great at doing is really building up our town. haha These are some things you may observe if you are passing through Wichita Falls, TX on any given day...

Well, LOOKY THERE! It is THE FALLS! What a beauty she is... although, you should know a secret. This beautiful, enchanting, brown water falls is artificial. That's right people, you can turn it on and off.

Here is one of our Wichitan folk standing near the shortest skyscraper in the world. Don't believe us? Just ask the Guinness Book of World Records. Here's the story: Some guy came into our beloved town and convinced the citizens of Wichita Falls to invest in a beautiful skyscraper. He showed us the blueprints, named his price, and started building this massive tower.

"The only discrepancy was that on the building’s blueprints, the scale was 1/12th of normal. One foot was reduced to one inch. Investors assumed that their property was destined to be a landmark building from which Oklahoma could be seen, or dirigibles could be tethered. In reality it turned out to resemble a fire department training tower." (TexasEscapes.com)

All the while, the scammer ran away with an estimated 200K! People have been picking on us good-hearted Wichitans ever since. haha

The last big attraction is "The Dirt Hill". This dirt hill has provided Wichitans with much entertainment. Whether it's sledding down it on a snow day, running up it for exercise or sitting at the top of it late at night watching the stars... this dirt hill is versatile and frankly, awesome. Though I haven't been able to find a picture of our beloved dirt hill on the internet... the video link will show you what it looks like along with more amazing Wichita Falls attractions! Postcards From Wichita

On a more serious note, I love love love my hometown! Even though it is plain and simple, the people that come out of it are so much fun, in my opinion! In high school, we decided we weren't going to break laws to have fun, so we had to be very creative. haha We would play sports alll theee timeeee, host a game of Capture the Flag or Fugitive all across town, get hooked on TV shows like "Heroes", and had all the time in the world to actually sit down and know each other better than most people know their own family. I love my friends from home and cherish the memories we've made.

When coming home from College Station, I see the Sutherlands billboard when passing over the bridge... and I have a sigh of relief... I'm finally home.
